From beast to beauty - A CB450 cafe racer
We’ve heard many people recently talk about converting a CB450 into a cafe racer, like what’s all the fuss about? When I personally think cafe racer: I think clip ons, a shortened looped seat with a cowl on and the classic design of a cafe racer from the 70s. When Crooked Motorcycles popped up on my Instagram feed and I saw their new build called ‘from beast to beauty’ I had to reach out to them to find some more out about this build. Based in Memmingen, southern Germany, I spoke to Dominikus, co founder of Crooked Motorcycles.
Building up their passion of motorcycles while in school along his side his mate Jakob, they never set out to build a business out of things. Which is what I rather like about this workshops history, they wherent in it for the money, just their love about getting their hands dirty. Oddly as it sounds Dominikus tells me they found the CB450 in a friends house, in the corner of the garage covered in chemicals looking rather slightly green, sounds fun.. Of course a bike of 8 years forgotten is going to need some TLC, they sorted the engine, new fluids and filter and the bike started straight up. Dominikus tells me they had a clear vision for the design of the bike, ‘It was clear that the Bike is going to be all Black with an accent of brown in the Seat area.’ Building a complete custom Tail with included LED taillight in the rear frame Loop, the engine was checked and re-sealed and frame was stripped, de-tabbed and shortened at the rear.
In to some finer details, they stripped it back and kept it simple with a Motogadget m.unit as well as
the motoscope tiny and m.blaze disc giving it that modern usability and look. They perfected the exhaust note, with the help from Hattech (something i’m still waiting to hear!). Keeping the bike a classic good-looking cafe racer, they put the Battery into the Tailsection, also adding a few extras like Biltwell grips, 5” Bates-style headlight and new coker Diamond Tires.
Dominikus tells me they have enjoyed this project so much they have 2 more CB450 builds lined up, we’re definitely looking forward to seeing them! We’ll leave you with some photos below…
